Don't be afraid to ask what the consultant will charge, especially in the grey area of expenses. Establish exactly what is included in the fee and what is not. Expect to pay anything up to £2000 + VAT a day for a high flyer with a big agency and around £350 - £600 for a solid consultant with sector experience. Anything less than £300 a day and you may not be getting the best advice for your money. A little digging at the start can avoid unpleasant surprises or conflict later.
